Halitosis / Oral Malodor -Treatment

Treatment

A patient of halitosis is advised to drink plenty of water to keep the mouth moist and wash out any lodged food particles. Treatment of halitosis includes:

Treatment of the underlying cause: If halitosis is as a result of fever or any underlying disease, treating the disease results in improved breath.

Oral Hygiene: Oral hygiene should be maintained by regular brushing of teeth, flossing between the teeth and cleaning the tongue with an infant brush or a small tongue brush to avoid damage to the tongue. Teeth should also be regularly cleaned by a dentist. A number of mouth washes containing chlorhexidine, cetylpyridinium chloride, chlorine dioxide, ticlosan and zinc chloride can reduce malodor. Chlorhexidine mouth washes, though very effective, could result in side effects like change in taste, burning sensation or pain in gums or staining of teeth.
