RSS Feeds   Text
Astigmatism - An eye condition in which the lens doesn't focus light evenly on the retina, leading to problems with visual sharpness.

Contact Lens - Lenses which fit directly on the eyeball under the eyelids.

Cornea - The clear tissue in front of the eye resembling a crystal of a watch.

Excimer Laser - This is an ultraviolet laser used for correction of the corneal curvature for refractive surgery.

Far Sightedness - This is a refractory error where the eyeball is too short and the light focuses behind the retina of the eye. This leads to difficulty in focusing on objects that are close to the eye. It is also called hyperopia or hypermetropia or colloquially as farsightedness or long sightedness.

Keratectomy - The surgical removal of corneal tissue.

Keratomileusis - Term that is used to describe the carving of the cornea to reshape it.

LASER - Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation; A low wattage laser is used as a light pointer and in toys. A high wattage laser can vaporize tissue.

LASER Treatment - Using a special strong beam of light of one color (laser) to heal a damaged area. A person with diabetes might be treated with a laser beam to heal blood vessels in the eye.

LASIK - Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis.

Microkeratome - This is a surgical device that is used to cut flaps of the cornea. It is affixed to the eye by use of a vacuum ring. After the micrortome is fixed and secured to the eye a very sharp blade cuts a layer of the cornea of a predetermined depth.

Near Sightedness - This is a refractory error where the eyeball is too long and the light focuses in front of the retina of the eye. This leads to difficulty in focusing on objects that are far from the eye. It is also called Myopia or near sightedness or short sightedness.

Ophthalmologist - A physician who is qualified and especially trained to diagnose and treat all eye and visual system problems, as well as diagnose general diseases of the body.

Thank you very much for the information. I have undergone lasik once, but, in the experimental stage, so the power is back to -6. I also had laser for bleeding behind the retina. This included Avastin - 3 times. Could I go for lasik to reduce power? Regards Sophia

I am 30 years old and a Software engineer at Bangalore. My power is LE -4 and RE - 8.5 but wearing LE -2.5 and RE - 4.0 with cylindrical due to double vision if it is correct power. I am very comfortable with glasses and dont want to take any unnecessary risk with my eyes. The reason why i prefer to go[if doctors agree so] for lasik is due to severe headache and not able to concentrate while driving with glasses. I will be doing at Netradhama at Bangalore.(most probably Dr. Sri Ganesh). Any advises or recommendations
