Most women experience menstrual cramps at one time or another. In primary Dysmenorrhea for unknown reasons the cramps tend to diminish or completely disappear following childbirth.
In secondary Dysmenorrhea the prognosis depends on the underlying cause and successful treatment of that condition. Since preventing the pain may be easier than stopping it, starting of any type of medication before the dysmenorrheic attack is more efficient in preventing pain. NSAIDs if started 3 days before the onset of menses and continued for 2 days after the onset may help to eliminate the cramps. Lifestyle modifications that include a balanced diet, regular exercise and relaxation techniques like yoga and meditation can prevent the use of medications by reducing the severity of the symptoms. |

If you're a woman and your dysmenorrhea is so painful that it disrupts your daily routine, better to have yourself checked by a doctor, specifically an OB-GYN. You might have an underlying problem that contributes to the dysmenorrhea. |
