Dysmenorrhea - Diagnosis

RSS Feeds   Text
Dysmenorrhea is diagnosed from the medical history and physical examination. A pelvic exam along with imaging studies, laparoscopy and hysteroscopy help to identify the causes of secondary dysmenorrhea.

Effective therapy requires an accurate diagnosis. Primary dysmenorrhea is usually diagnosed by review of medical history and physical examination. A typical history and a normal physical examination are sufficient to diagnose primary Dysmenorrhea.

A pelvic exam is done to rule out any abnormalities in the reproductive organs. The studies that are indicated to identify the causes of secondary Dysmenorrhea include – Imaging studies - Pelvic ultrasound, Computerized tomography (CT) and Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are non-invasive tests that are used to exclude any pelvic abnormalities. They can be used to diagnose congenital uterine anomalies, myomas and endometriosis.

Laparoscopy - A minor surgical procedure where the pelvic cavity is visualized with the help of a fiber optic tube with a small lens, which is inserted into the abdomen through tiny incisions. This procedure is done to rule out endometriosis and pelvic adhesions.

Hysteroscopy - Is a surgical procedure where the cervical canal and cavity of the uterus is visualized by inserting a hysteroscope through the vagina. It is used to rule out endometrial polyps.

I am one of those lucky women who have not experienced dysmenorrhea! If you're a woman and your dysmenorrhea is so painful that it disrupts your daily routine, better to have yourself checked by a doctor, specifically an OB-GYN. You might have an underlying problem that contributes to the dysmenorrhea.
