The fetus is one of the most dynamic biological systems, and in contrast to adults, drug effects are often irreversible. The kind nature and frequency of anomalies caused by a teratogen depend critically on the property of the drug, rate and amount of drug reaching the fetus, duration of exposure, stage of the fetal development at the time of exposure and effect of other drugs used in combination.
