1. Treatment with Medicines

2. Side effects of Pain KillersTreatment with Medicines :

Medicines play an important role in the treatment of cancer pain, which includes Non-opioids, Opioids and Adjuvant analgesics.

Non-opioids : These are drugs of choice for mild pain like bone pain, superficial pain, and muscle pain. Examples: Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen.

Opioids : These are the strongest pain relieving medicines, and can be taken only after a doctor's prescription. Examples: Codeine, oxycodone, morphine and hydromorphone.

Adjuvant analgesics : These medicines relieve pain in addition treating some other disorder in the body. Examples: Antidepressants, Anticonvulsants, Steroids and local anaesthetics.

Side effects of Pain Killers :

Side effects of opioids are low and can be easily managed.

Drowsiness and Nausea appear early in the treatment which can be managed by starting the treatment in a lower dose. Constipation occurs in some people after taking opioids for several days and can be painful. It can be managed by increasing the intake of liquids, dietary fiber, fruits, vegetables and bran. Medicines like laxatives and stool softeners can also be considered.

If a patient is allergic to a particular drug, then they may develop rash or itching and in this case it is advisable to stop the medication after consulting with the doctor.

Drug tolerance is a commonly observed phenomenon in patients taking opioids and over time, larger doses may be required to get proper or required results. The same phenomenon may also be observed if there is an increase in the pain. However, a need to increase the dose of medicine is not a sign of addiction.
