Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology is the commonly used form of initial diagnostic biopsy method for breast lumps. FNAC is done by cleaning the breast lump area, followed by insertion through the skin a 22 gauge fine needle and syringe through the skin. If the lump is non-palpable (cannot be felt), the procedure should be done under image-guidance (Stereotactic mammography or Ultrasound). Stereotactic mammography involves using computers to pinpoint the exact location of a breast mass based on mammograms (x-rays) taken from two different angles. The computer will help the physician to guide the needle to the correct area in the breast. With ultrasound, the radiologist or surgeon will view the needle on the ultrasound monitor to help guide it to the area of biopsy. FNAC is usually performed under ultrasound image guidance. |
