Binge Eating - Incidence & Prevalance

RSS Feeds   Text
As with all other disorders there are some predisposing factors that makes one prone to such type of illnesses. This disorder is not age- specific. It affects people of all ages and both sexes. The common observation is that women are affected more than men. 10-15 % of overweight and mildly obese people who try various fad diets and herbal programmes to shed the pounds are binge eaters.

In the Unites States approx.25 million people are struggling with 'Binge Eating disorder'. It is also estimated that almost 10 million females and 1 million males are fighting a life and death battle with other eating disorder such as Anorexia or Bulimia and only 6% of people suffering from Bulimia receive mental health care. Similar is the story with Binge Eating disorder.

The prevalence of this disorder in the community is high. Currently the funding to conduct research for Eating Disorders is very inadequate for eg the funding for research into eating disorders is approx. 75% less than that for Alzheimer’s disease.
