General Info about Appendicitis

The vermifom appendix or appendix in short, is a small part of the bowel or intestine. It is situated on the right side of the abdomen at the junction of the small and large intestines. It is a small narrow sac approximately 10 cm long and 1 cm wide. The appendix is a vestigial organ, that is, it serves no useful purpose.

General abdominal pain is often all that the patient will complain of during the first few hours of his attack But after the first few hours it becomes more evident that the chief seat of pain is at [the iliac fossa], and the general pain then usually subsides. In every case the seat of greatest pain, determined by the pressure of one finger, has been very exactly between an inch and a half and two inches from the anterior spinous process of the ilium on a straight line drawn from that process to the umbilicus.
-Charles McBurney, 1889

Hey Sabrina I'd have it checked as it very well may be appendicitis. Mine was removed 3 days ago and im so glad ive had it removed.

Before christmas i had abdominal pain and constipation for a few days but i dismissed it as just a general upset stomach due to something i had eaten. This Monday just past, I started having the same pain. I went to A & E on Wednesday and they touched the area and were very sure it was the appendix. Further tests confirmed it. I wasnt even gonna go to have it checked and when they said it was appendicitis i was shocked. I was in the theatre the next morning and had it removed.

After surgery, i was told the appendix was badly eroded and gangrenous. I told them about having pain in christmas time too and they told me i shouldve had it checked then as it couldve ruptured.

My advice to u is go to have it checked now. Its important to have it removed before it ruptures or starts decaying as it could affect your blood or other organs.

The actual surgery isnt a complicated one. I now feel bloated and constipated. The actual incision seems to be healing well. Many ppl report shoulder and neck pain and this is called co2 gas pain which occurs after surgery. Thankfully i only experienced this a bit the day after surgery.

To anyone out there who is experiencing abdominal pain without a knowing cause and think it may be the appendix dont be scared to have it checked out. I only went to hospital thinking it was normal cramps and im so happy iv had it removed before further complications.

Good luck Sabrina. I hope its just cramps ur experiencing but theres nothing like peace of mind. All the best

johnny

I have this really bad pain in my lower right side and it wont go away. It keeps me up at night. I dont feel sick or anything, I feel like I'm cramping but this is 10 times worse. Could this be appendicitis?

I have a question for anyone who may know about the heredity of appendicitis. My brother had it about ten years ago. My sister had it a year leter, and my father had appendicitis this week. What are the statistical chances of this happening to three people in one family like this?

you seem to feel just like i did 2 weeks after i had my appendix removed,3 weeks ago, i was finally in so much pain i went to the hospital and discovered i had a bad infection, one very large abscess and many small ones, my surgeon had seen me just 2 days earlier and thought nothing when i told him how much pain i was in, if you think something isn't right get a second opinion, and don't wait, it'll only get worse....

I just had my appendectomy 11 days ago, and my surgeon told me when the incisions start to heal they may turn black and blue. however, if you feel something isn't right, you should ask your dr. better safe than sorry...hope this helps!

Hi my daughter 13 years got opperated for appendicitis (open surgery) 10 days ago. Since the appendicitis was not in the normal place the cut was a bit long. After 10 days we have noticed a very tiny drop like yellowish thin fluid coming out of the cut in one particular place. Please advise why and what precaution to be taken.
