AMBLYOPIA / LAZY EYE | |
Causes of Amblyopia |

Amblyopia is caused by an abnormality that interferes with the normal process of seeing. This interference can occur at the level of the eye, at the connections between the eye and the brain, or in the brain itself. The stronger eye becomes dominant and retains good vision, but in the affected eye, the nerve connections between the brain and that eye fail to develop normally, and the brain learns to ignore visual information from that eye. The most common causes of amblyopia are misalignment of the eye or strabismus. Cloudiness of the normally clear visual pathway, due to abnormalities. It can be due to blockage of an eye due to trauma, drooping eyelid, etc., Vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, if uncorrected, can cause amblyopia. Amblyopia can also be caused by trauma to the eye or head, and diseases that affect the eye, such as cataracts. Some psychiatric conditions; and excessive use of tobacco, alcohol or other drugs may also be a cause. |

Posted on: 07/25/2011 I am a 51 year old woman that has been wearing a thick left lense since the 6th grade because of Amblyopia. All these years even as an older teenager I was told that in order to correct this I should have been patched and worked with as a young child. A couple of months ago I went to my Eye Doctor and we talked about my lazy eye again. He told me he could help me. Last Wednesday I had eye surgery inserting an artificial lens and I am back at work today. My sight went from 20/400 to 20/40 in my lazy eye. It is amazing what I wasn't seeing and it it wonderful the things I am seeing. Crisp.....everything is crisp. I don't know all the medical terms for what my doctor did, but if you would like more information I am getting all my paperwork together and I will be more informative a little later. My email is peopleperson1@cox.net.
