The treatment plan for alcohol abuse can be very broadly divided into two types, which are often interlinked, detoxification and treatment of alcohol dependence. a) Detoxification  This is the first step in the treatment of alcohol dependence. This is primarily the treatment of alcohol withdrawal symptoms. The best way to stop drug dependence is to stop it suddenly. The main aim of detoxification is the symptomatic management of the various withdrawal symptoms that emerge. Medications-
b) There are several methods to treat alcohol dependence, namely- Behaviour therapy Commonly used behaviour therapy is aversion therapy, which is done using either a sub-threshold electric shock, or an emetic.Psychotherapy Supportive and individual psychotherapy are commonly used. The patient is educated about the risks of the continuing effects of alcohol use, given the option for a change on accepting personal responsibility, and options to change.Group therapy Very useful as the patient can derive many benefits from group meetings. An important voluntary self-help group with branches all over the world would be 'Alcoholic Anonymous'.Deterrent agents They are also called as Alcohol sensitising drugs. Medications-
