Causes and Risk Factors of Age Related Macular Degeneration

Risk factors of the disease are as follows:

Age

Female gender

Race (advanced form of AMD is more common in whites)

Smoking

Obesity/ High cholesterol intake

Sunlight exposure

Hypertension and cardiovascular disease

Genetic factors

Age is the most important risk factor. The prevalence of AMD increases with age. It increases from 1.6% in the 52-64yr group to 27.9% above 74 yrs of age.
