Causes and Risk Factors of Age Related Macular Degeneration

Risk factors of the disease are as follows:

► Age

► Female gender

► Race (advanced form of AMD is more common in whites)

► Smoking

► Obesity/ High cholesterol intake

► Sunlight exposure

► Hypertension and cardiovascular disease

► Genetic factors

Age is the most important risk factor. The prevalence of AMD increases with age. It increases from 1.6% in the 52-64yr group to 27.9% above 74 yrs of age.

Hello, your article was indeed very educative. Further i would like to add that amongst the other Treatment modalities, STEM CELL TREATMENT is emerging as a very promising candidate for treatments.
