The treatment maybe conservative or surgical.

You may choose either one of these treatments.

Conservative Treatment

This is the initial treatment. Refrain from activities that cause the condition, until symptoms go away. Complications and recurrences are rare.

The treatment involves-

 Medication

- Analgesics and Anti-inflammatory drugs to relieve pain and swelling
- Muscle relaxants
- Cortico-steroid injections and spinal block injections

Application of hot and cold packs in the painful area to relieve pain

Restriction of sports and physical activities causing strain to the back

 Rest

Braces for the back (without the involvement of surgery)

Strengthening exercise for back and abdominal muscles

Aerobic exercises to improve the overall physical fitness

Physiotherapy

Periodic X-rays to check if vertebra is slipping

Surgical treatment

If the combination of medication and physiotherapy fails to provide relief or, if slippage continues and your daily activities suffer, then surgery is probably the best option.

Types of surgery

Lumbar decompression

This is a surgical operation performed at the affected area of the back to reduce the pain caused by compression of nerves.

Lumbar spinal fusion

This type of surgery is performed to prevent the movement at the painful area by means of fusing the bones.

Spinal Instrumentation

This type of surgical operation uses metallic devices like screws and plates to stabilize the spine
