Severity of symptoms varies. It may range from being asymptomatic to experiencing a paralytic attack.

The majority of individuals, about 95%, with poliovirus infection are asymptomatic. This is referred to as inapparent or subclinical infection. Among the 5% who exhibit visible symptoms, the severity varies. In some cases the central nervous system is affected, often accompanied with/without paralysis.

The following are the common symptoms of different forms poliomyelitis:

Abortive poliomyelitis

Nonparalytic poliomyelitis

Paralytic poliomyelitis
