Paralytic poliomyelitis

A severe form that occurs in less than 1% of polio cases resulting in paralysis. Although, early signs of improvement can be observed, 5 to 10 days later, there is recurrence of fever. Paralysis begins and progresses for 2 to 3 days. But, if the body temperature returns to normal, paralysis does not progress.

The symptoms for paralytic poliomyelitis are the same as nonparalytic and abortive poliomyelitis.In addition, the following symptoms may also ocur:

 Muscle weakness and paralysis

 Loss of reflexes

 Bladder paralysis

 Weakened breathing

 Difficulty in swallowing

 Flushed or blotchy skin

 Hoarse voice
