Individuals with severe polio symptoms experience complications that affect the heart, lungs and the urinary system. They include:

 Inflammation of the heart muscle (Myocarditis)

 High blood pressure (Hypertension)

 Fluid in the lungs (Pulmonary edema)

 Pneumonia

 Urinary tract infections (UTIs)

Poliomyelitis mortality in children is about 2 to 5% and in adults it is 15 to 30%.
