Common causes of osteoarthritis

Wear and Tear of joint structures due to old age
Injury in and around the joints
Infection from an open wound extending to a joint
Weakness of muscles 
Occupational strain (E.g. Knees are at risk for a miner)
Exertion of the joints due to strenuous exercises 
For example - weight lifting
Obesity (Responsible for more load to the joints)
Deformities like bow - legs and unequal length of legs
Hereditary causes (runs in the family)

If the xray shows that the bones are rubbing on each other then a joint replacement is the only option!
