Kyphosis maybe either-

Congenital, wherein, forward curvature of the spine is present at birth. This condition is very rare.
Or
Acquired, wherein, it occurs after birth, due to various causes.

The treatment depends on the cause of the deformity. You may opt for one of these two treatments: Conservative or Surgical.

The Conservative treatment consists of Drug Therapy, Physiotherapy and the use of Braces without the interference of surgical operation. It treats each condition as follows:

 Pain - Bed rest, Analgesics and Anti - inflammatory drugs

 Osteoporosis - Hormone Replacement Therapy, Intake of high calcium in the diet and as supplement

 Posture - Strengthening Exercise for Back and Abdominal muscles, Advising patient about maintaining an erect posture.

 Braces - For back support- used 24 hours /day through out the year, until condition is corrected.

 Traction - The nerve compression and pain caused is relieved by means of a device called Traction, under the supervision of a physiotherapist.

Surgical Treatment is done in the following cases-

Severe deformity

Patient not responding to Conservative treatment

Spinal cord damage

Two types of surgery are performed,

Instrumentation is a kind of surgery, which uses screws and wires to hold the spine straight

Fusion is another kind of surgery done to join the bony segments of the spine.
