The causes maybe categorized into two types:

Congenital causes

 Poor development of the spinal cord of the baby, while inside the mother's uterus.

 Poor development or absence of the bones of the spine (vertebrae)

 Fusing of the spinal bones with one another.

 Spinal cord diseases like spina - bifida.

Acquired causes

 Poor posture

 Injury

 Osteoporosis

 Degenerative diseases of bones of the spine

 Infections like Tuberculosis of the spine

 Degeneration of the cushion- like discs of the spinal bones
