High Density Lipoproteins - The Protagonist

HDL - The Protagonist

The article is about the class of lipoproteins called "HDL" high density lipoproteins or more famously "good cholesterol". HDL cholesterol makes up a smaller portion of the cholesterol carriers. HDL removes cholesterol from the blood by carrying it to the liver where it is metabolized. Therefore, it is beneficial to have high levels of high density lipoproteins in the blood.

High density lipoproteins, which can remove cholesterol from atheroma within arteries, and transport it back to the liver for excretion, seen as "good" lipoproteins. When measuring cholesterol, any contained in HDL particles serves as protection to the body's cardiovascular health.
