Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that damages the eye's retina and can result in blindness. The term "diabetic retinopathy" refers to changes in the retina which often occur in people with diabetes. Diabetes can affect the eye in a number of ways. The main problem here usually involve the fine network of blood vessels in the retina - hence the term diabetic retinopathy. It is the leading cause of vision loss among working-age adults in industrialized countries.
It is one of the major complications of diabetes, along with neuropathy (involving the peripheral nerves) and nephropathy (involving the kidneys). |
