A person with diabetes is advised to incorporate regular physical activity into his daily routine. Since diabetes can cause nerve damage, there could be loss of sensation in the foot leading to injury and other complications. Choosing the correct footwear, whether walking in a park or on a treadmill, is extremely important and is a prerequisite to any physical activity. Incorrect footwear can also lead to ankle strain or leg pain which can further lead to people discontinuing physical activity. Footwear should have good ankle support. Roomy shoes with cotton sports socks are ideal. Both loose or tight footwear should be avoided. A number of diabetic foot specialists who can design correct footwear are available, and one must get custom-made footwear from these specialists. |
