There is no need to lose sleep over a high cholesterol level. Some corrective measures will help control it. 1. A low-fat, low-cholesterol diet helps a great deal in this direction. This means keeping the total fat consumption -- saturated, polyunsaturated and monounsaturated -- to fewer than 30 percent of your daily intake of calories. Remember to keep the cholesterol intake to fewer than 300 milligrams per day. Saturated fats contained in butter, whole milk, hydrogenated oils, chocolate shortening, etc. should comprise no more than 1/3rd of the total fat consumption. 2. Using skimmed milk and including fish in the diet has been found to be beneficial. 3. Consumption of a wide variety of vegetables, pasta, grains and fruit is another effective method. 4. Being aware of the nutritional labels and choosing low cholesterol foods also helps keep the intake lower. |
