What is the Procedure for Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)?

Abdominoplasty can be performed by various techniques-

  • Complete abdominoplasty
  • Partial abdominoplasty (Mini-Tuck Abdominoplasty)

Generally, a horizontal incision is taken just above the pubic area. The length of the incision depends on the amount of skin to be removed. If there is loose skin above the navel, the surgeon usually takes another incision around the navel. The loose underlying tissue and muscles are brought together with sutures to tighten the abdominal wall.

There are several variations to the design of the incisions and the technique of the surgery. When the amount of loose skin is minimal and the excess fat deposits are below the navel, the second incision around the navel can be avoided. This procedure is called a partial, or ‘mini tuck’ abdominoplasty.

Endoscopic abdominoplasty may be useful when patients have only a mild degree of excess fat and muscle laxity.
