Medical Tourism – The Best Hospital in The World is Not the Best

Atsu was a frail 72-year-old Japanese who had traveled the world as a Merchant Navy officer. He had always enjoyed good health however a test during his annual health check up showed that his creatinine was starting to go up. His doctor said he might require a transplant. This came as a shock to the old man. His only son worked in the USA running many beautiful Golf courses. They spoke on the phone and the next day he flew to the states. They decided to visit Cleveland and seek an opinion from one of the most renowned clinics in the world. Here he underwent tests and he was told to return after six months as they felt that his creatinine and other parameters were not high enough for a transplant.

In Singapore one his lawyers heard this and suggested that they next time should travel to India to Chennai as they knew of this hospital that had good facilities and doctors doing a number of transplants. After 6 months his son decided to travel his father to Chennai and visited Sri Ramachandra Hospital. He was found to have a borderline raised creatinine. Looking at the frail structure of the body they reassured him that a transplant though an option in future was not the only option. He was told about ‘Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis’. He was also shown how this could be done and he met a couple of patients at the hospital undergoing similar procedures. He was also explained and shown a machine was that could do the process overnight. He was delighted that he had an option besides transplant in the future. He and his son were a bit annoyed that the busy doctors at the world famous hospital in Cleveland never discussed these options with his father. The son summed it up in one line ‘the so called best hospital in the world is not the best’. He returned back to his country only to promise to come back for the procedure when required.
