What is Arrowroot?

Arrowroot is a gluten-free starch obtained from the roots of the arrowroot plant, a starchy tropical plant.

A native to South America and a staple in the Caribbean cooking, it is a perennial herb growing about 3 to 5 feet with turmeric-like broad, flat, ovate shaped leaves.

The plant was named ‘Arrowroot’ because it was used to treat people with wounds from poisoned arrows in ancient times.

Arrowroot powder is white and powdery like cornstarch, but ranks much higher on nutrition content. In fact, it’s an excellent substitute for cornstarch and flour as a thickening agent in sauces, soups, gravies and puddings. However unlike cornstarch, it does not impart a starchy taste to food.

Choco-arrowroot cookies

Ingredients:

  • 55 g butter
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 20 g almonds
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 80 g arrowroot
  • 12 teaspoon baking soda

Method:

  • Melt honey and butter in a saucepan.
  • Remove from heat and mix the remaining ingredients into a dough.
  • Keep aside for 10 minutes. If the dough is not firm, add more arrowroot.
  • Roll into small balls and bake at 170°C for 10-15 minutes.

Arrowroot crepes

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup arrowroot powder
  • 4 eggs
  • 4 tsp oil
  • Pinch of salt
  • ½ cup milk
  • ½ cup water

Method:

  • Whisk together all ingredients to create a smooth batter.
  • Heat a pan over medium heat.
  • Brush a thin layer of oil on the pan. Using a measuring cup, pour about 3 tablespoons of batter into the pan. Tilt the pan around so that the batter spreads properly.
  • Cook the crepe for about 30 seconds on the first side, till it becomes golden. Flip and cook for 30 seconds on the second side, until done.
  • Repeat with the remaining batter.
  • Serve hot with honey.
