How to Meditate

How To Meditate

To meditate is to turn inwards, to concentrate on the inner self.

Meditation is an intensely personal and spiritual experience. The desired purpose is to channel our awareness into a more positive direction by totally transforming one’s state of mind.

Concentration (dharana), meditation (Dhyana) and enlightenment and absorption (samadhi) are the three stages of meditation.

Elements of Concentration:

Chanting mantras (repetition of an Affirmation to increase positive spiritual energy) in the form of prayers or performing Pranayama (breathing exercise) or even Visualization sets a prelude for Meditation.

Affirmations can be employed to emphasize our relationship with the Divine or our own Healing Powers. Affirmations can help strengthen the mind and eliminate self-doubt.

Short rituals like offering fragrant oil (earth element), holy water (water element), lighting Lamps (fire element), incense sticks (air element) and offering flowers or garlands (ether) can also set the background for meditation. These rituals help in cleansing the psychic energy and prepare the mind for meditation.

Concentration increases if one fixes on a positive energy Once the concentration is achieved it is easier to meditate.

Visualization is a meditative method in which one directs the cosmic breath to the diseased person or body- part along with mantras and colors.

Once the concentration of the mind on an object is achieved then the mind goes onto the stage of meditation that is sustained concentration. How long can one sustain the position of meditation is the question. If one is able to hold the same object or the thing for long, then he is supposed to have reached the stage of Dhyana or meditation. From this stage one passes to deep meditation wherein, the person concentrates only on the essence of that object, which is Samadhi.

Samadhi leads to Enlightenment no doubt, but that is not the end. When someone is able to go beyond samadhi stage to 'Shun ya', then he can experience the Truth or Extreme Bliss. Very few are able to experience this Absolute Reality. This is an inward journey, which brings absolute peace, happiness and tranquility.
