Ichthyosis - Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Which Doctor Should I consult for Ichthyosis?

A: If you believe that you may suffer from ichthyosis, because of a family history of the disease, make it a point to consult a dermatologist. If you are unsure about the presence of ichthyosis and are not aware of any family history of the disease simply visit your general physician. Your doctor should be able to make a diagnosis based on physical examination, your family history and your past medical history. If you require specialized care from a dermatologist, your doctor will refer you to one.

Q: Is there anything I can do at home to get relief from symptoms?

A: Long soaks in a bath will help to some extent and you can even try using a loofa sponge to gently removed the thickened scales. Make it a point to avoid using scented cosmetic soaps and instead opt for glycerin based soaps with added fats and oils. Avoid drying yourself with vigorous toweling and instead dab yourself gently to dry the skin. If you live in a region with dry air or low humidity levels, try using a humidifier in your home.
