1. Which is more common-the dry form or the wet form?

The dry form of AMD is much more common than the wet form.

2. Can the dry form turn into the wet form?

Yes, there are high chances of a dry form of AMD progressing to wet AMD. Amsler grid test is a very useful test to detect early changes or deterioration in vision. It is a square grid of small squares with a central black dot. The patient needs to concentrate on the central dot with one eye and see if he visualizes any distortions or black spot.

3. If I have been diagnosed with early AMD, should I take the nutrients to help prevent disease progression to the intermediate stage?

AREDS study has shown no role of nutrient supplements in early cases of AMD. However, if a patient has been diagnosed as early AMD, a dilated fundus examination by an eye doctor can help detect progression. A regular amsler grid test can also detect early changes in vision.
