v Cholesterol, a fat like substance, is made primarily in the liver (about 1,000 milligrams a day).
v Cholesterol forms an important component of the cell membranes of animal cells and helps in production of certain hormones like progesterone, estrogens, and testosterone and in the synthesis of vitamin D.
v Fat is the most calorie-dense nutrient supplying 9 calories per gram.
v Hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease, which leads to heart attack.
v Cholesterol intake should be lesser than 300 milligrams per day to maintain normal BMI.
vSaturated fats contained in butter, whole milk, hydrogenated oils, chocolate shortening, etc. should comprise no more than 1/3rd of the total fat consumption.
