Teleophthalmology Solution through Medindia - Welcare Health Systems

Medindia has partnered with Welcare Health Systems to bring innovative solution for screening patients who suffer from eye related disorders. The Medindia - Welcare partnership specifically targets patients who are prone to retinopathy due to diabetes or hypertension. Early screening of such a disease can prevent blindness.

Welcare is India’s leading TeleOphthalmology company promoted by Ophthalmologists. Since its inception three years ago, Welcare has reached out to more than 200,000 Diabetic Patients. Welcare works in 20 States across India and has partnerships with over 160 doctors from all over the country.

Magnitude of the problem

India has got more than 70 million diabetics and one in four is at a risk of developing an eye complication like retinopathy that can lead to partial or total blindness.

This makes screening of all diabetic patients mandatory once a year. In a country like India that has approximately only 20,000 trained Ophthalmologists, it is not logically possible to make all patients visit the Ophthalmologists directly for a Retinal Examination. Screening 70 million patients every year would mean screening almost 200,000 patients daily. This is not possible unless innovative methods are applied.

Hypertension is another common problem in the community and together hypertension and diabetes is now becoming very common especially within the 50 plus population.

How does Medindia Welcare Technology mean to address this gap?

Patient Retinal Images from your centre are captured using a simple fundus camera, uploaded into a web based platform and within 30 minutes an Ophthalmologist from a remote location will report it. If the images are insufficient in quality, the report will ask for another examination after dilating the eyes.
