Tip 1 : Try vegetables like asparagus, zucchini, squash, and artichokes to use in different dishes.
Tip 2 : For a flavorful pork picadillo stew--use lean pork with onions, peppers, tomatoes, raisins and green olives. Check online for recipes.
Tip 3 : To thicken stews and soups use pureed, cooked vegetables such as carrots, onions or potatoes.
Tip 4 : Multi-grain, stone-ground, 100% wheat, cracked wheat, or seven-grain doesn't equal whole-grain. Look for the word "whole"!
Tip 5 : Make vegetables part of your lunch every day by eating veggie wraps, pizzas or sandwiches.
Tip 6 : Much of the fat in chicken and turkey is in or under the skin. Remove skin and fat for a leaner, healthier meal.
Tip 7 : Try growing your own vegetables and herbs. You can start small with a few pots on your balcony or deck.
Tip 8 : Use up leftover whole-grain bread or crackers as bulk in a meat loaf (or meat-less loaf). Check online for recipes.
Tip 9 : Switch it up. Make vegetables your main-dish by topping a salad with your choice of a protein food.
Tip 10 : Read the ingredients list on food packages. The whole grain should be the first or second ingredient, after water.
