Mission Statement

Action Group for Rural Organisations abbreviated as AGRO is a Registered Non-Profit Organisation registered under Societies Registration act,in 1991.AGRO has been formed with the main aim of developing the wastelands of poor farmers in Tirunelveli District.This District is having two different kinds of landscapes.One area have irrigated lands with the blessings of Tamirabarani River which is one of the main River in TamilNadu.The other area fall under low rainfall and without having any irrigation sources.This caused the poor farmers kept their lands as idle for several decades.Many Blocks like Manur,Alangulam,Keezhapavoor,Radhapuram,Sankarankoil,and others are dry areas.AGRO studied this aspects and found that if suitable Soil&Water conservation measures will be adopted the farmers could be able to raise drought resistant forestry,Horticulture species,and adopt agroforestry models of cultivation in wastelands with the available low rainwater.With this focus point, AGRO is now working in three Blocks in this District and completed the following programmes. Wasteland Development in 300 ha. Afforestation&Eco.Development programmes in 245 ha in hill slope villages. Drinking water schemes provided to 18 villages. Micro-credit in 20 villages through Women SHGs Health awareness and General awareness trainings conducted in 10 villages. Vocational training programmes in tailoring&Typewriting were conducted for the benefit 85 poor Girls. We are planning to undertake the following programmes within next two to three years. Wasteland Development:To cover 700 ha in 30 villages. Afforestation&Eco.Development programmes in two hill areas. Establish a vocational training centre for disabled peoples. Establish a demonstration cum training centre for Forestry/agro-forestry and its nurseries. Select 10 most backward villages and implement an Integrated community Development programmes through the involvement of target groups from planning to implementation stage,which includes Health and HIV/AIDS programmes in addition to Land Development,Housing,Income Generation Programmes,Toilets for all and others.

Aim & Objective of NGO

To select the most poor wasteland holders through baseline survey. To train these wasteland holders in selection of suitable forestry species,nursery practices for the same,Soil&Water conservation activities,planting and maintenance,agro-forestry methods,group formation and group functioning and group management for their programmes,etc. Select most degraded forest hills to implement Afforestation&Eco.Development programmes and implement Afforestation&Eco.Development programmes in order to conserve ecology of the hills. Implement health programmes in order to train the peoples maintain hygienic practice and possibly reduce the spread of infectious diseases. To help the disabled peoples to acquire vocational skills and undertake suitable Income generation programmes for their livelihood. To encourage the farmers adopt natural farming methods using the bio-fertilizers. To undertake Rural Research projects on bio-fertilizers like Vermi Composting and demonstrate the same in large number of villages with the help of Agricultural Research Institutions and Agricultural professionals in order to induce the farmers in adopting the same. To induce and train the farmers in dry forestry/Horticulture/agro-forestry methods and for this purpose try to establish a training cum demonstration centre. To help the disabled peoples acquiring vocational skills.
