A 37-year-old woman who had been told seven years ago that she could not be a mother because of her excessive weight has given birth after undergoing weight-loss surgery with a gastric band and gastric by-pass.

Michelle Bowater weighed 25 stone and was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome in 2000, "I tried all the tricks in the book to lose weight. The last straw came in 2004 when I was so big I got stuck in a chair. It was humiliating," she said.

She first had a gastric band put in and lost 10 stone and opted to have gastric bypass as well. She lost 15 stone in the process and within nine months had become the proud mother of a son.

"I'm so glad I went through with the surgery - without it, I wouldn't have had the chance to start a family," she added.
