Woman Who Lost Leg to Bone Cancer Sues Over Late Diagnosis

by Rajshri on Jun 12 2008 4:22 PM

Sally Hurst, from Barwick in Elmet, near Leeds has launched a lawsuit against her doctors for failing to diagnose bone cancer in its initial stages. This late diagnosis cost her a leg that had to be amputated.

"I was in great pain for several months without knowing what was wrong, and this caused me severe distress," Ms Hurts said. "Ultimately, if I had been referred to a specialist earlier, I might not have lost my leg."

She was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in April 2005 after tests, X-rays and a biopsy. Earlier in 2004 when she was preparing for her wedding she experienced knee pain and her GP said it was caused by ligament damage. He never referred her to a specialist.

The cancer did not respond to chemotherapy and her leg had to be amputated. Hurst is currently a trustee of the Bone Cancer Research Trust in Leeds.
