According to the Citrus County Sheriff's Office, Kelly Johanneson (36), disappeared for a month in late 2013, she later returned and said she had Stage IV breast cancer that she had been at Moffitt Cancer Center for testing.

Johanneson asked her family and friends to help her pay the medical expenses, specifically for cash. She received hundreds of dollars from family and friends.

Her supporters created a donation website - KellysHope on, that collected $4,400. Various fundraisers were held, including a large event by Citrus County Airboat Alliance.

Detectives received a complaint in September 2014 that her condition might be fake. Detectives began interviewing Johanneson friends and family, and learned that no one had been with her to the doctor or had any proof that her claims of having cancer were actually true.

Detectives then interviewed Johanneson, who told them she had been to Moffitt and also provided names of doctors, and paperwork from Moffitt.

Detectives tried to validate by contacting Moffitt Cancer Center, and found that the center never had a patient of that name. Johanneson date of birth and Social Security number confirmed the paperwork was fraudulent, followed by which she was then arrested.
