Smokers trying to kick the butt this New Year are advised to wait until the festive season gets over, says a charity.

According to Quit, a help service for smokers wanting to stop, those making a New Year's resolution should wait two weeks into the new year for the temptations may make it hard for them to stop.

Quitline manager Ian Ferretter said that the delay would give smokers extra time to prepare themselves for quitting.

"Quitting smoking is the perfect way to kick off 2009," News.com.au quoted him as saying.

"But our advice to smokers is sometimes waiting a few weeks makes all the difference and gives you the best shot at a successful quit attempt," he added.

Ferretter also said that the smokers shouldn't be too disheartened if their first attempt fails.

"We know the overwhelming majority of smokers want to quit, but it can often take multiple attempts to quit successfully," he said.
