An experienced Psychiatrist has pointed out inherent alcohol problems that Ethnic minorities undergo, albeit silently, since they are wary of approaching assistance. They need to be given a helping hand from distinguished services – which are few and far between. Ethnic minorities do not seek help proactively, and hence they lose out from being overlooked by health providers in developing special services for them. There is no exaggeration in saying that, this area warrants additional research.
The United Kingdom is a home to various ethnic minorities who use alcohol heavily, causing deleterious affects on their health, as compared to the rest of the population. Alcohol misuse and ethnicity are looked upon as a social taboo, particularly amongst Asian communities in The UK. This leaves many people with alcohol problems to weather the storm on their own, without any knowledge about the types and sources of assistance.A common approach will only prove counter-productive in tackling the needs of the minority ethnic groups. What is needed is a culturally tuned approach, built upon the edifice of high quality research within distinct population groups.
