Brinda Karat Receives Legal Notice over Ramdev Issue

The Marxist Communist Party (CPI-M) leader, Brinda Karat has been issued a legal notice on based upon her allegation that medicines produced at Ramdev's pharmacy were contaminated with human bone powder and other animal parts .

The notice issued on behalf of B.D. Sethi, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader in Faridabad, alleged that Karat's 'mischievous act was supposed to cause great religious disturbances in country.'

The notice, which comes after the Uttaranchal government's clean chit to Ramdev, asked Karat to apologise unconditionally or face legal action for the allegations. The charges had 'destroyed the faith of people in ayurveda and yoga’ and intended to ‘outrage the religious feelings of the particular community of Brahmins and pure vegetarians', it added.

Karat and the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), the labour wing of the CPI-M, had alleged that Ramdev's Divya Yog pharmacy in Haridwar was violating the Indian Drugs and Cosmetics Act 1940 and labour laws.

A laboratory test by the health ministry also said some of the medicines produced at his pharmacy had violated licensing and labelling provisions of the act.

The BJP leader called upon Karat 'to tender unconditional apology before the media within two days from the receipt of the notice' or else face legal action.

The Uttaranchal government had last week said no traces of animal parts or human skulls were found in medicines prepared by Ramdev's pharmacy.
