Yeast Genome Unravels Genes Critical For Maintaining DNA Integrity
Researchers in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine said that genetic material in the yeast cell guards the genome from lethal DNA damage.

The researchers feel that it very important in the creation of a database of disease-causing combinations of mutated human genes.

Jef Boeke described about a genetic network that is existing in the genome of the yeast cells which is necessary for the stability of its genome.

The study also identified previously unrecognized genes critical for maintaining DNA integrity and new functions for already studied genes.

Boeke is a professor of molecular biology and genetics. He said that human diseases are caused by multiple gene mutations that are difficult to identify.

Hence yeast cells are an excellent model for such a study. This is because 25 % of the human disease genes are also found in yeast.

Hence researchers can targets on these genes and develop new, more targeted and less toxic cancer therapies. These findings of the study were reported in the journal Cell.
