by Medindia Content Team on Mar 13 2006 2:32 PM

Nearly two lakh women will be participating in the 'Pongala Mahotsavam,' festival at the Attukal Bhagavathy temple, a festival meant exclusively for the women folk. The festival began on March 5 and will culminate as a grand finale on March 14.

'Pongala Mahotsavam' is considered a very auspicious and important festival of this temple, which is perhaps one of the oldest temples in South India. The devotees make a dish of rice and jaggery as an “offering” to Goddess Bhagavathy, at the time when the head priest calls out the ‘ auspicious’ time.

The administration is spruced up to provide protection, facilities and arrangements so that the festival celebration goes on without any hitches
