A herbarium will be set up in Jharkhand to preserve the rare herbal plants that are on the verge of extinction. The government has tied up with yoga guru Ramdev in setting up the herbarium.

The Tribal Research Institute (TRI) in the state will set up the herbarium at Bariatu in Ranchi with an initial investment of Rs.150,000. Baba Ramdev's Patanjali Yoga Peeth will collaborate with TRI in the project.

"We have started work to set up the herbarium. The process to plant herbal plants will begin from March this year," said Pushpa Mandal, deputy director of TRI.

"The herbarium will have precious herbal plants with medicinal values. We will approach the traditional medical practitioners who treat people with these herbs and also those having knowledge of the herbal plants, which are vanishing gradually," she said.

The Patanjali Yoga Peeth also plans to open an Ayurvedic medical college and hospital in Ranchi. Ramdev earlier said that Jharkhand provides 75 percent of herbs that he uses in his medicines.
