Hospital To The Rescue Of Disabled Children

by Medindia Content Team on Feb 5 2006 4:13 PM

Children who suffer from limb disabilities are being provided with prosthetic rehabilitation free of cost by India’s Paraplegia Hospital in the City of Ahemedabad. This is a joint venture with the US, and it is providing the services without any publicity. The project called ‘A Leg to Stand On’ was launched by the Paraplegia Hospital in February 2003. As of date as many as 148 amputees have derived the benefits of this program.

The hospital's Workshop Manager Dhiren Joshi admitted the number is very small. The project, a joint venture of the government of India and a US-based organization, was started to help transform the lives of children with limb disabilities in Gujarat by offering them physical capabilities. The project requires more publicity to benefit more people, through providing mobility to disabled children.

The limbs manufactured here are different from the Jaipur Foot, Joshi added, referring to the highly successful artificial limb project launched in Rajasthan in 1968. The limbs provided by the hospital are much lighter, and also provides the scope for adjustment. Hospital officials were not sure why the project had not been given due publicity.
