Guruís Supporters Clash With CPI-M Men
Supporters of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and yoga guru Ramdev clashed violently on 5 January 2006. The supporters of the guru are reported to have raised slogans against the CPI-M MP Brinda Karat, who leveled charges that the medicines of the guru were laced with animal and human body parts. The police have detained 30 of Ramdev's supporters, after they tried to forcibly enter the office of the party.

Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss confirmed on 4 January 2006 that the lab tests proved that the medicines Karat had purchased from Ramdev's Divya Yog Pharmacy violated licensing and labeling provisions of the Indian Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.

The Central Government has referred the matter to the drug controller of Uttaranchal.

Ramdev, best known for his programs on several spiritual TV channels, has denied Karat's charges against him. He said he would welcome any inquiry into the contents of his ayurvedic medicines.

Karat, a Rajya Sabha MP, asked the State Government to take action against the yoga guru.

In a letter to the health ministry a few months ago, Karat had alleged the use of animal parts, including dried testicles, bones and skulls crushed to powder, in medicines prepared by Divya Yog Pharmacy.

She also said that the manufacturer had concealed this from the users of the medicines.

Along with the letter, Karat had sent samples of the medicines used for treating epilepsy and impotency to the ministry. These samples were reportedly tested at the Government owned Central Council for Research in Ayurveda and Siddha.
