AstraZeneca, the drug czar has requested the number of drug regulators spread across the Atlantic to approve Seroquel.

Previously the drug was given permission to be used in the treatment of mania.

But now with his research and other works done at the base in Alderley Edge he has supplied new information based on clinical trail that it is very effective in treating patients suffering from mental depression.

Bipolar disorder is a characteristic mental imbalance in which the individual experience severe mood swings and also feels euphoric during episodes of mania and then immediately suffers from the lows characteristic of mental depression.

The incidence of this disease is very low and is about 3-4 % among the adults. It is the sixth leading cause of disability in the world.

Doctors say that the condition might be associated with genes and may be hereditary. It affects equal number of patients in both the sexes.

The acquiescence of the license for the new drug from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) would be an important milestone in the history of the drug.

The drug Seroquel alone spawned a profit of 1.16 billion pounds in 2004.
