New protein diet program questioned.

The New protein rich diet that created waves among the public was questioned as they recommend the patients to include double the amount of proteins in their daily diet.

Scientist at the Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization wrote the book on this diet. This best seller sold half a million copies in Australia.

The diet said that 30-35% of one’s energy requirements should be provided by proteins than the 15% that was initially obtained. Hence people should include more amounts of fish and meat in their already existing diet.

But on the other hand the Atkins diet says that large quantities of fruits and vegetables and less amount of carbohydrates included in a person’s diet.

The high protein diet conducted a study in which there were 100 overweight subjects (women). 50% of them were put on the high protein diet and the other half on the high carbohydrate diet. The calories and the weight lose in both the cases were the same.

In this study people who had increased triglyceride levels and showing insulin resistance lost more weight on high protein diet. Hence it was published in the Nature editorial as advantageous to all but the research showed that it was useful only to a select population experiencing metabolic disorders.

The spokesperson for the Institute for Optimum Nutrition, London told that there was no difference in the weigh loss when comparing the diets. On the other hand the scientists of Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization said that many of the individuals had asked about the details of their diet and hence they published the book.

The spokesperson of the British Dietetic Association did not approve of the intake of excessive amount of protein. She said that the diet taken by dieters should only contain about 15-20% of proteins.

Carbohydrate diet should contain the bulk of the meal and include five portions of fruits and vegetables. Dieters should take in few calories or accelerate the usage of more calories by keeping themselves active.

Various quick ways of loosing weight will only put them into deep trouble the moment they go back to their normal diet and is not the solution for permanent weight loss.
