by Medindia Content Team on Dec 28 2005 12:33 PM

A face transplant surgery is expected to be conducted in China for the first time on a girl aged 11 years. Liu Fangyuan, the girl concerned had suffered extensive burn injuries two years ago. The burn injuries were caused by her own aunt who used vitriol liquor in an act of revenge against the girl’s parents.

The girl is willing to undergo the surgery even if it were to endanger her life. The General Hospital of Nanjing Military Command’s research team led by Hong Zhijian is readying itself for the operation. Hong is of the opinion that there is not much risk to the girl’s life because of the proposed surgery, as their technologies had attained the sophistication to perform such operations.
