Two Chinese manufacturers who were making and selling inferior quality infant formulas have been imprisoned. This follows death of several children after being fed with this fake low nutritional quality milk.

According to official estimates, up to 200 babies after being fed the formula milk of little nutritional value suffered.

The doctors diagnosed the condition as "big head disease", where infants' heads appear abnormally large in comparison to their bodies. This was the analysis of media people. "My girl, the first child of mine, died when she was only four months old," said Zhang Linwei, from Wangzhuang Village in Fuyang.

Before that, I thought my daughter's face was becoming fatter and fatter because she was fed well and grew fast," Mr Zhang said.

So far no toxicity has been detected in the formulas but the nutritional quality was negligible. Very poor quality milk was being supplied to the infants.

An analysis of one formula found it contained as little as one-sixth the required amount of protein and other nutrients needed for a baby's proper development, reports said.

In the words of Zhang Fangjun, a medical expert at Fuyang's Renmin Hospital,"Drinking such fake milk powder is no different from drinking water. Such so-called milk powder cannot provide any nutrition for babies' growth,"
