Heparin does not protect from recurrent heart attacks

Professor Mahaffey and his team from Duke Clinical Research Institute have found that either form of heparin (both low molecular weight and unfractionated)gives emergency protection to heart attack patients by breaking the clots in blood flow to the heart reducing the risk of heart attacks for 24 hours. Though both the forms of heparin gives emergency treatment they are not found to avoid the recurrence of heart attacks leading to increased morbidity and mortality.

The research team conducted a study by giving Low Molecular Weight (LMV) heparin or unfractionated heparin to 10,000 patients and the study recruits were analyzed. 5% of study recruits died in six months and 8% of patients died before one year. There was no difference in death rate between patients who received LMV and unfractionated heparin. Both forms of heparin were only useful in emergency treatment and do not prevent recurrence heart attacks. People should undergo routine medical check up for their Lipid profiles and regularly monitor their health for risk of heart attacks and they should have a balanced regular diet with regular risks which will maintain a good health.
