South Africa May Start Manufacturing Bird Flu Vaccines

by Medindia Content Team on Nov 22 2005 8:31 PM

The Director of Biovac Institute in Cape Town said that the company is conducting various studies to start producing bird flu vaccine as the chances of bird flu pandemic is high worldwide which may lead to a high shortage of vaccines and anti-flu drugs for treating infected people in South Africa.

The South African authorities feel that they have to manufacture their own bird flu vaccines as the maximum worldwide production of bird flu vaccines would be around 900 million doses and if a possible pandemic occurs this dosage will be mostly available for people in developed countries and the people in African continent who are more prone to infection due to malnutrition and reduced medical treatment will not have any access to these vaccines and anti-flu drugs which has lead to the need of underdeveloped and developing countries to manufacture their own drugs and vaccines for bird flu.
